Flywheel Hosting Review

Local Development Environment:

A fuss-free way to develop WordPress sites locally

Implementing changes to your WordPress website can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if those changes involve important functionality.

Compatibility problems may arise between plugins or the database may start to freak out.

Testing your changes in a local environment is almost always a smart decision, and that’s where Local by Flywheel comes in.

This simple tool (formerly known as Pressmatic) simplifies the process of creating WordPress websites locally. You’ll no longer have to create complex environments, but just install a tool with an elegant and simple interface.

This is one of the simplest tools you can use to set up a local test environment and, at the moment, the application contains many features.

Let’s take a look at some ways you can use Local by Flywheel to increase your productivity as a WordPress developer.

Main Features

  • You can configure complete WordPress sites with just a few clicks.
  • Includes local support for SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates.
  • Offers flexible environment options.
  • Allows you to access your sites via SSH .
  • You can share your configurations with the outside world using demo URLs.

How to start using Local by Flywheel Hosting

As mentioned above, Local by Flywheel is very easy to use. In fact, we can teach you everything you need to know about the tool in just three short steps.

The first thing you need to do is to go to the tool’s home page, download the latest version and install it. Then, you can go to the first step.

1) Set a local test environment

When you launch the application you can create your local site by clicking on the + icon at the bottom left:

On the next screen, you will have the possibility to choose a name and a domain for your site.

You can choose any domain name and suffix and the application will modify the hosts file to make it work.

Local by Flywheel will automatically create a directory to store your site files, but you can also set it to any folder you want. When you are done with these settings, click on the Continue tab below.

On this tab, you will be able to choose which versions of PHP and MySQL to use on your site, as well as the type of server.

We recommend using the latest versions of the tools in question, along with the web server you prefer (NGinx / Apache)

Click Continue. Here you can enable Multisite for your installation. You can also choose the administrator’s username, password and e-mail address:

Now, you can relax while Local by Flywheel gets your site up and running (it shouldn’t take long).

When finished, your new WordPress site will be displayed in the left column of the application and you can click on its name to review the details:

To start tinkering with your site, you’ll need to access the dashboard as you normally would.

Use projects to simplify the installation process

Local by Flywheel allows you to save your WordPress sites as “blueprints” for later use.

If you configure a test site using the GeneratePress theme and also install the Rank Math SEO package, you can use the blueprint option to replicate this exact configuration later.

It’s a simple feature, but it can save you a lot of time if you prefer to configure your test environments just like this.

Flywheel Hosting

The application will ask you to provide a name for your project and decide which version of PHP and which web server to use. Choose your favorite settings and click Save As Blueprint.

To activate a project, click on the + sign in the lower left corner of the application and choose the Add site from blueprint option.

Select which blueprint to use and the program will do the rest. You can review and delete existing projects at any time in Preferences > Blueprints.

Choose add-ons

Flywheel Hosting

Activating the add-ons will require restarting the application. Once back, you can access it by choosing your site and navigating in its Utility tab

Should You Choose Flywheel Hosting?

If you build WordPress websites for clients, I think Flywheel hosting is a great option. It has a ton of unique features that will save you time and make your life easier. Better yet, Flywheel gives you those features at a competitive price.

If you’re a regular WordPress user (that is – you don’t build sites for clients), the decision is a bit tougher.

While some of Flywheel’s unique features are still helpful, the managed WordPress hosting market at Flywheel’s price point just got a lot more competitive.

Flywheel Hostingoffers several features designed specifically for WordPress novices, allowing the easy creation of a website from scratch thanks to prefabricated demonstration templates and other tools that facilitate the use of the CMS.

Flywheel Hosting History

Dusty Davidson, Tony Noecker, and Rick Knudtson, the founders of Flywheel, helped mold the startup scene in Omaha, Nebraska.

Like many great startups, they started out of a garage and set out to build the type of hosting service they would personally want to use.

They set out seeking a solution that would answer many of the problems they as consultants were facing in their web development process.

In 2014 they raised a $1.2 million seed round. In 2016, Flywheel Hosting hit a milestone of 50,000 clients and with it raised $4mm in Series A financing.

They turned around and added almost 50 people to their team in their downtown Omaha office.

The company also acquired a WordPress development application called Pressmatic and brought its founder, Clay Griffiths, on board to round out an already impressive team.

Flywheel rebranded Pressmatic to Local slashed the $129 price tag down to zero for Flywheel customers.

Flywheel Hosting Pros

1) Intuitive Staging

Migration and staging tend to be difficult for non-technical individuals. Flywheel is one of the few hosts that has focused specifically on simplifying these challenges for its customers.

Flywheel has turned the staging process into an accessible sandbox, where users can test out new plugins, trial run WordPress updates, and examine new themes for their sites without risking any sort of interruption to their live site.

Without Flywheel, the process of redesigning someone’s homepage or doing a complete site overhaul would take hours.

2) Free Website Migration

Flywheel also makes it painless to migrate your website to their hosting by simply doing it for you. Simply go to the Flywheel website and click Migrate My Site.

Sign up for an account and fill out a short form about your site

Flywheel will go into your WordPress site and grab a copy of it. This way your site never goes down during the process.

Flywheel will then upload a copy of the site to one of their demo sites where you can view it before you decide on a payment plan.

Then all you have to do is click a button to make it go live.
They aim to make transitioning from your current hosting provider to Flywheel as seamless and painless as possible.

3) SSL Certificates

Security is important, both in practice and in building trust with consumers. A Secure Sockets Layer, is used to secure and encrypt communication between computers.

This SSL certificate adds a green padlock to your website, and in addition to increasing security, it also helps ecommerce customers feel safe when shopping on your website.

It also allows you to securely accept credit card payments, and it even boosts your sites Google ranking.

4) Load Times Faster

Excessive load times can harm your selling potential, and most hosting providers are not optimized to load WordPress websites.

The industry standard for squeezing a higher performance from your WordPress site is to download either the W3 Total Cache plugin or the WP Super Cache plugin. These plugins speed up your website by creating a temporary place to store data. This is why when you return frequently to the same website you’ll notice faster load times.

Flywheel uses server-side caching and servers designed specifically to deliver peak performance and blazing fast speeds to WordPress websites.

5) Reliability

A recent performance report done on Flywheel Hosting showed a rock solid performance, with a past-year uptime of 100% and a lifetime score of 99.99%.

Flywheel Hosting Cons

1) No uptime guarantee.

While so many sites do offer this guarantee, Flywheel sticks behind its decision not to because no service is perfect and can have 100% uptime.

They do however stand behind their reliability which scores at an impressive 99% uptime.

2) They don’t allow some plugins

For security reasons, Flywheel has stricter requirements for plugins than most hosting providers.

This isn’t typically a hangup for their customers, and the number of plugins they don’t allow is quite small, but it’s something to be aware of.

3) They don’t offer email hosting

Unlike most hosts, Flywheel doesn’t offer the typical host-provided email accounts. They believe it makes more sense for their users to take advantage of dedicated email hosting providers.

Optimizing Flywheel Flywheel

One of the best features of Flywheel is that on their official website there are many guides in e-book format on how to solve, optimize and improve the performance of your site with them.

In this case Flywheel Hosting suggests installing on your site the WP Rocket Plugin

WP Rocket is more than just a page caching plugin. Optimizations such as minification and combining of CSS/JS and regular database clean-up can be easily accomplished with the plugin.

Below are best-recommended settings and configuration to get the most out of what WP Rocket offers.

  • Enable mobile cache. This setting will create a separate cache file for mobile users.
  • Have a membership site or using WooCommerce?

You may want to enable support for logged-in user cache. However, test this thoroughly as it can sometimes show stale cache (which you don’t want for those who are logged in).

Use with caution. However, when working properly, it can significantly help keep your site loading fast as logged in users are now hitting cached pages rather than repeatedly getting uncached pages.

  • Cache lifespan is completely dependent upon the site’s use case. For regularly updated sites, set a lower lifespan.

For those sites that receive infrequent updates, setting a higher lifespan will require fewer times to rebuild the site cache after it has expired.

Tip

Want to only use WP Rocket for optimizations, but don’t want to use its page caching feature since Flywheel has its own caching system?

You can use this drop-in plugin to kill the caching feature of WP Rocket:

Disable Page Caching

eCommerce Site to Flywheel Hosting

Migrating an eCommerce site may seem like a daunting task even for experienced developers, as there are some special considerations to take into account to ensure that orders don’t fall through the cracks.

The migration guide for your eCommerce site to Flywheel Hosting will guide you through this process and allow you to be up and running in no time!

Flywheel Hosting

Visit the guide here for instructions on how to migrate your site to Flywheel without problems using the custom Flywheel Migrations plugin.

Or, let them do it for you: click here, fill out the form, and Flywheel’s team of experienced professionals will take care of the initial migration

Make sure everything works the way you expect (cart, checkout, coupons, etc.). Do you have problems? Ask Flywheel’s friendly technicians for help.

Disable order taking on the Live site

Begin this step only when you’re ready to go live on Flywheel. You’ll want to let your customers know that ordering will be disabled for a bit while you transition your site over to Flywheel hosting.

You can either disable the ordering function specifically (check Flywheel documentation for more info), or you can put the entire site into maintenance mode using a plugin like CMP (Coming Soon & Maintenance Plugin or Coming Soon Page).

This step is vital to ensure customers don’t place orders on your old site during the transition period, as those orders may not get moved over.
